About Akkermansia Muciniphila

Akkermansia muciniphila is a Gram-negative, anaerobic commensal bacterium in the human gut, renowned for its unique ability to degrade intestinal mucin.

Abundance & Distribution:

It accounts for approximately 1% to 5% of the total gut microbiota. The distribution of Akkermansia extends far beyond mammals, with traces found in a wide range of other animal species.

Colonization & Age Relationship:

Its colonization in the human gut begins in early childhood, and its abundance is closely correlated with age.

Discovery & Identification:

The strain was first isolated and identified in 2004 by Muriel Derrien and Willem de Vos at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

2010

Studies revealed that Akkermansia muciniphila is inversely associated with obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, with higher abundance observed in healthy individuals.
